Chapter 14

In his hand was my throwing knife. I took it from him and walked over to the chair while stuffing it back into my bra, “What do you mean, ‘not taught tricks of the trade’?” I asked.

“I’ve got to get back, as the Lámh Chun Chúnta is still goin’ on, so I’ll make this quick. Not every changed vampire is set up as a conversion, many conversions die. The untenured survival rate of turning someone is pretty low, and with that, accidents do happen. Some have woken up, stumbled around in the dark, and were burnt to a crisp the next day having no clue what was going on,” he surveyed the room and gave a nod, “Now, Siren, stay here and rest ’til the festivities tonight. I’ll have someone come get you. Sleep; you’ll need it,” he walked out the door and shut it behind him.

I sat there for a few minutes, taking in all the new information. Vampires could heal human wounds, and it wasn’t just the older ones. That would make sense on how I kept healing and why I didn’t have a scar on my chin. But why did I have scars on my forearm? Healing me up meant that they were bleeding on me. How much blood does it take before I’m no longer human? Was this the process, ween them onto the vampire blood? How did the flukes happen? Did any of those vampires survive?

The idea of me becoming a vampire was budding into reality. I chose to stay and become stronger, but at what cost? If I continue down this path, there is no way I can go back to what I once had. I rested my arm on the table and my forehead in my hand. That was quite the concept. My eyelids felt like lead, and I couldn’t keep them up any longer.
